Evidence demonstrates that humans have been living in the Rockwall area for at  least 13,000 years, and the Creek and Caddo indigenous tribes were present during the 19th century. The first American settlers arrived around 1850, and as they were digging wells, they discovered massive rock walls under the ground that appeared to be crafted by human hands at some point during ancient times. These rock walls provided a name for the town when it was established in 1854. Subsequent studies by archaeologists and geologists found that the rock walls were naturally jointed geological formations. Although early growth was relatively slow, Rockwall was home to more than 1,500 people in 1950.

Suburban sprawl, the construction of Interstate 30, and the completion of Lake Ray Hubbard have all contributed to Rockwall’s growth. By 1990, the population entered five digits for the first time, reaching 10,486. Within two decades, the population had more than tripled, and almost 37,500 people made their homes in Rockwall. As of 2019, the estimated population reached almost 45,900.
