For more than 2,000 years, various types of concrete have been used for a wide assortment of purposes. Strong and durable, concrete is the right choice for a number of paving projects of all sizes. Whether you need concrete repair or installation, the pros at HI-TEK Paving Services have the knowledge, experience, and skills to assist you.

How Do You Repair Concrete?

The repair method will depend on the type of damage that the concrete has suffered. For example, sunken slabs can sometimes be leveled through a process known as mudjacking; several small holes are drilled in the slab, then a cement slurry is pumped through them to lift the slab. Cracks in pavements that are not vertical load-bearing components might be mended with epoxy injections, and concrete grinding or shot blasting may repair stained or pitted concrete. Shallow, cosmetic damage may be repaired by installing a concrete overlay, which is a thin layer of new concrete that is installed on top of the existing concrete. Other types of damage may require the removal of the slab and the installation of a new concrete slab. Regardless of the repair method, however, it is important to identify and correct the cause of the damage to prevent it from recurring. Therefore, we would need to inspect your pavement before we can recommend an appropriate repair method.

What Might Damage a Concrete Pavement?

Concrete Installation & Repair Services In Dallas, TexasOne source of damage that we frequently see in the Dallas-Fort Worth metroplex is tree roots. Many popular trees have extensive lateral roots that can spread far beyond their trunks. If the roots are large enough to place sufficient pressure on the side of a concrete pavement, they can push the slab out of alignment or crack it. If roots grow beneath a slab, they can lift it vertically. Cyclical wet and dry periods can cause one or more slabs to sink, and water penetration can cause cracking or delamination.

Why Do Concrete Repairs Matter?

The first problem with damaged concrete is that it can be hazardous to people and vehicles. For example, an uplifted slab in your parking lot could trip pedestrians, make drivers lose control of their vehicles, unseat bicyclists, or send a motorcyclist skidding along the pavement. Should any of these things happen, you could be left vulnerable to potential lawsuits. The second major problem with forgoing concrete repairs is that water infiltration could inflict additional damage. A third issue is that the damage could be of a nature that makes your pavement in violation of the Americans with Disabilities Act. Finally, damaged concrete is unattractive, which could negatively impact your curb appeal.

How Do You Install Concrete?

Although ramps, parking lots, curbs, and sidewalks may look quite different, the basic techniques for installing them are essentially the same.

  1. If necessary, we start by clearing and grading the site.
  2. Next, we perform any excavations that the project requires by removing the soil to a predetermined depth.
  3. On some installations, we construct a base of crushed stone.
  4. We perform a final grading to ensure proper drainage.
  5. After leveling and compacting the area, we construct forms to contain the concrete mix.
  6. If necessary, we install mesh or rebar to make the concrete capable of withstanding the loads that will be placed upon it.
  7. We pour the concrete, then finish the surface to make it smooth or textured.
  8. Between 48 and 72 hours after the pour, the concrete is usually sufficiently set to allow the removal of the forms.
  9. Depending on the specific circumstances, we open the pavement to traffic somewhere between seven and 14 days.
